Liverpool's Manager Provides No Excuses and Pledges to Find Route Out of Slump

Liverpool's head coach stated he had to “look at myself” following the Reds endured a sixth loss in seven English top-flight matches at home against Nottingham Forest and insisted he would find a way out of the champions’ slump.

Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop prior to the match, produced the biggest win at Anfield in their club records as the Merseyside club slipped to an 8th loss in 11 fixtures in all competitions. The most expensive domestic acquisition, Alexander Isak, was again unnoticeable and the home side contended the defender's first goal should have been disallowed for similar reasons to Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed effort versus Manchester City prior to the international break. But the manager admitted the buck stopped with him and offered no alibis.

“Nobody wishes to hear me now speaking about officiating calls if you are defeated 3-0 at home to Nottingham Forest,” said the Liverpool head coach. “I ought to look at myself first and my team, but it does show you how a score can change the flow of a match. Earlier I was just hoping for us to score a strike. Afterwards we hardly generated anything.

“Of course there is a way out, especially with the quality footballers we have. No matter if you triumph or are beaten when you reflect you are always considering: ‘In which areas can we do better, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is different from questioning your abilities.

“I want to emphasise I am accountable for the present defeats. You are answerable when you are winning but also responsible when you are defeated. I can not provide sufficient reasons for us to have the outcomes we have. That is not good enough and I am responsible for that.”

Liverpool’s display fell apart as the coach made multiple attacking changes when chasing the game. “It was the same away at Nottingham Forest the previous campaign,” he said. “I substituted the French defender off and put on the Portuguese forward and he found the net immediately to equalize at 1-1. At that time it was courageous, currently it’s probably unwise.”

The Anfield side previously were defeated in back-to-back at Anfield Premier League fixtures by Forest in 1963. The most recent occasion they suffered consecutive league matches by a 3-0 margin was in the mid-60s.

The manager commented: “It was very bad. Playing on home soil, conceding 3-0 regardless of which team you encounter is a terrible result. Unexpected if you consider the opening 30 minutes of the match. I did not witness us creating so much in the opening 30 minutes maybe the whole season, and the initial occasion they entered in our box they found the back of the net.

“It did not happen against Manchester City, but in all other game we have been the controlling side and were capable to create opportunities. Lately it is nearly consistently that we fail to convert our opportunities and the ones we allow find the net.”
