Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined acronym came to light a couple of months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to health professionals such as child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to treat a young patient who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it disavows all charges it is accused of. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is completely different.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that once promoted harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
